The family and I made a quick dash down to the Mexican Caribbean last month. Beautiful places, endless opportunities for adventure and very gracious people. But it's not Bonaire. Brushing your teeth using bottled water (not a problem with Bonaire tap water); making a forced contribution to the local police retirement fund (driving can be a challenge down there for a gringo); arguing with sly gas station attendants for correct change in pesos (the U.S. dollar is the de facto official currency on Bonaire). I could go on. We will certainly visit again. Unless Bonaire moves closer to Texas!

| Did you know that Bonaire will become a fully integrated municipality within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on Oct 10, 2010, along with the islands of Saba and St. Eustatius (and thus marking the end of the current Netherland Antilles and its central government based in Curacao)? This will lead to more direct help from Holland on solving problems and funding projects that shape Bonaire's future. The official currency on Bonaire will become the U.S. dollar starting on Jan. 1, 2011, replacing the Netherlands Antilles florin. Our take on these developments? Very good news indeed for travelers and the future welfare of the island and its resources. |

Looks like Continental Airlines is going to pick up a bit of the slack from the New York area to Bonaire this winter (remember – no more Delta non-stops from JFK).
Starting Feb. 18, 2011, Continental will offer a 2nd non-stop flight from Newark to Bonaire.
Southbound – Flight #1553 departing Newark Friday night at 11:55PM and arriving Bonaire on Saturday morning at 4:22AM
Northbound – Flight #1556 departing Bonaire on Saturday at 6:00AM and arriving Newark at 10:44AM
Last return is scheduled for Apr 2, 2011. This flight schedule is in addition to their existing schedule (identical flight times) that departs Newark on Saturday nights; arrives Bonaire Sunday mornings with the return to Newark later that morning.
