Just as important as packing your reef-safe sunscreen and favorite hat, everyone coming to the island must comply with all COVID-19 testing requirements. The same is true for travelers returning to the United States.

Here is the latest on entry requirements for both Bonaire and the U.S., along with a list of testing options currently available on the island.

Current Entry Requirements for Bonaire (Unvaccinated Travelers)

Besides a valid passport, visitors 12 years of age or older entering the island on direct flights from the United States and Canada will require the following:

  1. A negative PCR (also listed as RT-PCR or NAAT) test result, from a test taken within 24 hours before departure to the island; OR
  2. A negative PCR (also listed as RT-PCR or NAAT) test taken within 48 hours of departure for Bonaire and a rapid antigen test upon arrival.
  3. A completed Health Declaration Form (required for all travelers, regardless of age) submitted between 72 and 48 hours before departure. Find the form here.

You can carry printed copies or show proof on your mobile device of test results for your flights from USA to Bonaire as well as upon arrival.

Antigen testing is conducted at Flamingo International Airport upon arrival. It is administered by Hestia, costs $47.50, and results are available within 30 minutes. Pre-register for your antigen test at Bonaire’s airport here. Pre-registration is required. You will receive an eight-digit code after your appointment is confirmed. You must present this at the test site.

For Vaccinated Travelers

Besides a valid passport, visitors 12 years of age or older entering the island on direct flights from the United States and Canada will require the following:

  1. A negative PCR (also listed as RT-PCR or NAAT) test result, from a test taken within 48 hours or less before departure to the island AND proof of vaccination, completed 14 days or more prior to arrival (original CDC document required).
  2. A completed Health Declaration Form (required for all travelers, regardless of age) submitted between 72 and 48 hours before departure. Find the form here.

You can carry printed copies or show proof on your mobile device of test results for your flights from USA to Bonaire as well as upon arrival along with the original CDC documentation of your vaccination.

Where to Get Tested in the United States

If you’re unsure where to get tested in the United States, both Walgreens and CVS pharmacies offer rapid diagnostic PCR tests. For a PCR (also shown as RT-PCR or NAAT) test, the Abbott Labs ID NOW test is the most commonly used that has rapid diagnosis with results sent to you within 24 hours. The analysis takes about 20 minutes and is usually done at your test location.

Walgreens, CVS and other test sites offer the rapid diagnostic PCR test (which is what you want) as well as rapid antigen tests (sometimes listed as Abbott Lab’s BinaxNOW tests) – which is not what you want.

Rapid PCR testing is also available at Miami International Airport.

How Testing Time is Calculated

You may be confused about when to schedule testing. If you are planning to do 48 hour testing, the time between your PCR test and date you leave for Bonaire cannot exceed 48 hours. It is based on the day you depart for the island with no overnight in between — you’ll need to arrive on Bonaire that same day. So if you overnight in Miami or Atlanta, the 48 hours would be measured from the day you depart that city for Bonaire (not the city you flew from the day before).

Also keep in mind, should you go the 48-hour route, you’ll need additional antigen testing at Flamingo Airport when you arrive if you are unvaccinated. You can find out more about Bonaire’s entry testing requirements here, including a link to the required Health Declaration Form.

Entry Requirements for the United States

As of January 26, 2021, all passengers two years of age and older, returning to the United States from a foreign country, must be able to show proof of either of the following to be granted entry:

  1. A negative PCR or Antigen test result, from a test taken no more than three days prior to departure; OR
  2. Documentation of recovery (proof of a recent positive viral test and a letter from your healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel).

NEW – Additional Test on Bonaire

Starting Sep 1, 2021, all U.S. visitors staying longer than 7 nights on Bonaire will be required to take a free Antigen test at the Public Health Department on day 5 after their arrival.

For a U.S. traveler staying 7 nights (or less) on Bonaire (such as arriving on a Saturday and departing the next Saturday), they would not be required to do the 5-day test.

You will still need to do your Antigen or PCR test required for U.S. entry 3 days or less before you return to the USA. These results would need to be sent to Public Health. You can email your negative Antigen or PCR test results to the Public Health office at publichealth@bonairegov.com

For those who are staying more than 7 nights and must take the test on day 5 after arrival (date of arrival is day 0), an appointment time will be scheduled upon arrival at the Bonaire airport prior to entering Immigration and baggage claim.
