Everyone knows about Bonaire’s undersea reputation and dedication to nature. But the island is blessed with another natural attribute that is constant and reliable — Bonaire’s easterly trade winds. Coupled with three ideally located, natural playgrounds, Bonaire’s windsurfing, kiteboarding and sailing are as good as you’ll find anywhere. Beginners and students will discover the unique sailing areas for these three sports ideal for learning and improving, while experienced surfers and sailors will find exhilaration in the consistent winds and incredibly beautiful waters of Bonaire.
Windsurfing on Bonaire
Bonaire’s world renowned windsurfing has been on the international radar since the late 1980’s. At Lac Bay, on the island’s windward east coast, visitors revel in a windsurfing mecca featuring a reef protected lagoon of 8 square kilometers with predominantly shallow, flat water with onshore winds that clock 15-20+ knots regularly.
Two exceptional surf schools, Jibe City and Bonaire Windsurf Place are located at Lac Bai – one of Bonaire’s most beautiful beaches! Bonaire has been called the best place in the world to learn and improve your windsurfing skills. No wonder Bonaire’s windsurf professionals have dominated the sport’s freestyle circuit for the last 15 years. This year Jibe City announced they will be expanding their business with a windsurf school on the west side of the island at the new Delfins Resort! Surfers are super stoked as this location is perfect for intermediate and advanced sailors.
Kiteboarding on Bonaire
Bonaire’s kiteboard scene hit its stride in 2002, when Kiteboarding Bonaire first started offering lessons and rentals. Located on Bonaire’s southwest coast, the Kite Beach (known as Atlantis on maps) is a surf-camp outpost with two kiteboard schools. Along with Bonaire Kiteschool, these two centers have all you need in the right spot. Off shore winds and nearshore shallows make it a perfect launching and teaching area. Once your skills and comfort progress, you can rip and jump on reaches up and down the coast line for miles.
Both centers offers lessons and rentals, as well as special organized events such as down winders and Klein Bonaire excursions. Guest safety and progress is insured with professional instructors, chase boats and radio integrated helmets for students, so instructors are always nearby and communicating.
Bonaire Sailboats, Rentals and Lessons
Sailing on Bonaire is a time honored tradition and way of life. But the Bonaire Regatta’s humble beginnings back in 1967, with a race for 27 cases of beer, began the island’s celebration and love of the fun side of sailing. With its natural harbor protected by Klein Bonaire a half mile offshore, the waters up and down Bonaire’s leeward coast are a cruising playground. And all manner of sailboats ply this blue highway.
If you’re looking to rent a daysailer, ocean cruiser or just try sailing, Caribe Watersports offers lessons and sailboat rentals of all shapes and sizes from their facility at the Regatta headquarters in town or at Eden Beach. South Caribbean Sailing, located at the Plaza Resort marina, also has instruction and boat rentals up to 46 feet.
Just want to enjoy the sea, wind and sails without the work? Several sailboats offer excursions where the captain and crew take guests for sunset sails, snorkel tours and even dinner cruises. Don’t miss the chance to spend some time sailing along the coast of Bonaire.
